The Opportunity

Western Family, Pattison Food Group’s flagship Private Brand, wanted to bring excitement and novelty to the salty snack aisle. Shoppers were hungry for something fresh and buzzworthy—products that could break through the crowded chip category while staying true to Western Family’s approachable, fun personality.

The challenge was twofold: create a completely new product concept in time for spring, and then follow up almost immediately with a limited-edition Canada Day SKU that would capture the patriotic energy of the summer season. Both launches needed to feel special, stand out on shelf, and connect emotionally with shoppers.

The Insight

For Party of 4, the insight was simple: the salty snack aisle is all about flavor adventure. Shoppers are constantly on the lookout for something exciting to try, and variety packs traditionally lack energy and shelf appeal. A single bag combining four bold chip flavors would be a disruptive and irresistible idea.

For Oh! Canada, research revealed that West Coast shoppers are increasingly motivated to buy local, especially around moments of national pride. With ketchup chips already a cult favorite among Canadians, pairing them with a classic original flavor in a red-and-white mix would celebrate Canada Day while tapping into a deep sense of patriotism—and a surprising amount of ketchup chip fandom.

The Solution

Whitespace Brands created two distinct, limited-edition designs that were playful, bold, and unmistakably Western Family.

For Party of 4, we brought the concept of “four flavors, one bag” to life with lively illustrations of chip characters, each representing a unique flavor. The design leaned into celebration, using festive cues and a vibrant purple banner to clearly communicate variety and fun.

When Oh! Canada was greenlit, the timeline was incredibly tight—only ten weeks from idea to shelf, a process that would normally take six months. We leaned into Canada Day iconography with a dramatic red-and-white color scheme and a giant maple leaf backdrop. The ketchup and original chips were given playful personalities, embodying the spirited, tongue-in-cheek Western Family voice while making the red-and-white mix instantly clear to shoppers.

Both designs balanced storytelling and clarity, ensuring the products felt special while remaining approachable and true to Western Family’s identity.

With their success, both products are set to return next year, cementing their place in the lineup for future backyard and patio seasons.
